Thursday, May 1, 2014 Shari DeWitt 32475 General News Strong City AT&SF Depot Restoration The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Depot was built in 1913 for a cost of $20,000. The one story, pressed brick building was built in the mission style and trimmed with cut stone and decorative brick, with a tile roof. The current depot replaced an earlier one that had set about 100 feet to the east. The old depot was no longer large enough to accommodate the heavy passenger traffic that had been experienced by Strong City in those years. The new depot was commenced on November 15, 1912. completed and ready for use on June 13, 1913. The City gained possession of the building in 2006. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Jun 27, 2007, for its historical association with the growth and development of Strong city, Kansas and also for its architectural significance as a example of a county seat style Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Depot. The city applied for and was awarded a KDOT Transporation Enhancement Grant for the restoration of the depot. Emporia Construction and Remodeling was awarded the bid and completed construction on June 15, 2015. The City Office relocated to the depot and is located in what was the original office in August 2015. There are public restrooms, a waiting room/meeting room, and railroad museum. Railroad artifacts and memorabilia are being accepted. The city is still seeking funds for the restoration of the freight room and a portion of the baggage room.
