Welcome to Strong City

Heart of the Flinthills
Strong City is located in Chase, [CS], County in the heart of the beautiful Flinthills on the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, Highway 177. The city itself is famous for its rodeo each summer. The rodeo is one of the first and largest P.R.C.A. approved rodeos in the nation. It attracts over 20,000 visitors in the first week of June and draws contestants from all over the world. The parade travels from Cottonwood Falls to Strong City, the two communities being one mile apart.  The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (aka Spring Hill Ranch and Z-Bar Ranch andwww.nps.gov/tapr/learn/historyculture/ranch-time-line.htm ) is located just 2 miles from Strong City.  Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. The nearly 11,000-acre preserve is co-managed by the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy (a nongovernmental, non-profit organization). The preserve represents a nationally significant portion of the once vast tallgrass ecosystem and includes buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Preserve was established explicitly as a unique public/private partnership between the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy.

Cottonwood Streetscape Project is Underway

The City was awarded a K-DOT Transportation Alternative (TA) Grant in July 2022. This is an 80/20 grant that will allow the city to resurface Cottonwood Ave. from the US Hwy 50 and Cottonwood Ave. intersection South to the intersection of Cottonwood Ave. and KS Hwy 177. There will be new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, handicap parking, crosswalks and a loading/unloading zone as part of this project. Water lines for homes in the project area have been moved in preperation for the project. There will be a slightly raised & Stamped drivable median from 5th Street North to East 6th St.

K-DOT accepted bids from contractors in September 2024. The contractor awarded the project is Killough Construction, Inc. out of Ottawa, KS.

This project connects to the SRTS project that was completed in 2023. 

Construction began during July 2025.
